From March 9-11, Bay-Waveland Yacht Club (BWYC) will host the final qualifying round for the United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA) 2012 Team Trials Championship to be held in late April.
The USODA Team Trials event selects sailors to represent the United States in international competitions including the Worlds and several continent events. The United States National Team is also selected from the top sailors at this very competitive event. Approximately 70 young sailors, male and female, from the ages of 9-15 will compete in the Red, White and Blue fleets on Saturday and Sunday.
Sailors who have registered for the event come from the entire Gulf Coast area including Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Texas and other southern states such as Arkansas, North and South Carolina and Tennessee.
Because this is a national scoring event there are registrants from afar including St Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco CA, Annapolis Yacht Club in Annapolis MD, Chester Yacht Club in Brooklyn, NY, Brant Beach Yacht Club in New Jersey and Nagawicka Lake Yacht Club in Hartland, WI.
Local sailors include William Diaz from Bay-Waveland Yacht Club, Michael Burns, Boyd and Claire Housey from Pass Christian Yacht Club and Ricky Welch from Long Beach Yacht Club.
Pre-registered beginning sailors from Fairhope Yacht Club in Alabama and Lakewood Yacht Club in Spring Texas will compete in the Green Fleet an race on the same course as the more experienced sailors.
Participants and their families will receive the typical BWYC hospitality along with the sailing experience via a Welcome Party Friday evening, an Outdoor Movie Pizza Night on Saturday and an Italian buffet at the Awards ceremony Sunday night.
Richard “Boo” Heausler is Regatta Chair and Clinton Edwards is Race Committee Chair. Lucien “Beau” Gex is the current Commodore of the BWYC.
