Sheriff Garry Welford was killed Wednesday afternoon trying to stop a truck fleeing from deputies.

On Wednesday night, throngs of law officers from numerous agencies scoured an area of woods and searched nearby homes looking for two suspects.

Welford was struck at about 3:30 p.m. while trying to put out spikes on Bexley Road South at Howard Road to stop a fleeing pickup truck. The sheriff was airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, where he died at 4:23 p.m.

About 200 officers Wednesday night were searching for Brandy Nicole Williams, 18, who was allegedly driving the maroon pickup truck, and for Christopher Lee Baxter, 24.

Both suspects are from Lucedale.

Baxter was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear for sentencing in a meth manufacturing case in which he pleaded guilty.

Williams had recently entered a pre-trial diversion probation program on grand larceny charges in Jackson and George counties.

Attorney David Futch, who had represented Williams, said the case involved the theft of four-wheelers and multiple suspects.

Officers from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation; George, Greene, Harrison, Hancock and Jackson county sheriffs departments; Lucedale Police Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol and others were assisting in the search for the suspects. MBI and the District Attorney’s Office are investigating the sheriff’s death.
