LONG BEACH

Police say a man found with LSD and controlled substances not prescribed for him is an emergency-room physician at Garden Park Medical Center in Gulfport.

Police arrested Dr. Roderick Gray Newell, 58, of Lover’s Lane, on Friday after officers responded to a welfare concern about a driver passed out in a vehicle, Assistant Police Chief Don Bass said this morning. Police said they found Newell in a vehicle at Oak Court and Live Oak Drive on Friday afternoon.

Bass said narcotics agents obtained a search warrant for Newell’s home after the discovery Friday afternoon.

Bass said Newell was in possession of 99 doses of LSD, five types of prescription drugs and marijuana. Investigators believe the prescription drugs were medications Newell had prescribed for other people.

Newell is free after his release on bond from the Harrison County jail.

The DEA considers LSD one of the most potent hallucinogenic drugs known to man. It is not manufactured legally.
