Bank robbery suspect arrested

An anonymous tip led to the arrest Sunday night of a man suspected in five armed robberies across Pearl River County, including a bank heist in Picayune, said Deputy Police Chief David Ervin.

A dark-green Subaru identified as the getaway vehicle in last week’s robbery at a First National Bank in Picayune led authorities to the suspect in Gonzales, La., Ervin said.

Christopher Anthony Fortuna, 34, of St. Amant, La., was held in Gonzales pending extradition to Mississippi.

Authorities on Monday said the 12-day crime spree began on May 21 with a holdup at Check Into Cash in Picayune. Armed robberies were reported in the county at Logan One Stop in Carriere on May 28, and at Caesar Country Store and McNeill General Store on May 29.

The bank branch on Cooper Road was robbed on June 1.

Picayune police and the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department believe Fortuna robbed each of them, Ervin said.

Police and sheriff’s investigators passed on a tip to law enforcement officers around Gonzales, where officers set up surveillance and arrested Fortuna in a traffic stop.

Ervin said investigators seized the 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback and a bag believed used in the bank robbery.
