Supers moving back to historic Bay courthouse

The Hancock County Board of Supervisors will begin holding some of its meetings at the courthouse on Main Street, until its new home on Highway 90 is complete at the end of the year.
Board President Rocky Pullman said the idea to start having meetings again in downtown Bay St. Louis was that of District Three Supervisor Lisa Cowand.
“It will be a different atmosphere,” Pullman said. “I think it will be a lot easier on the public.”
The board will hold at least one of its monthly meetings at the courthouse, depending on the availability of the rooms, Pullman said.
The meetings will most likely be held in the family court room on the second floor of the courthouse, he said.
“You know me,” Pullman said. “I would not care if we met in a parking lot, but it will be nice to be back at the courthouse.”
Prior to Hurricane Katrina, the board held its meetings in the main courtroom, which was partitioned in half to accommodate both functions.
Pullman said once the new annex facility on Highway 90 is opened, the board will hold its meetings there.
The annex facility is about 50 percent complete and is expected to be finished by the end of the year, Joel Moody of Yates Construction said Friday.
Moody said the first floor walls and interior framing are complete and workers have begun work on the secondary roof and the second story.
The annex project has been delayed because of weather issues, but hopefully it will be a good summer, Moody said.
“The project is moving along nicely,” he said. “We are expecting it to be completed by the end of the year.”
Pullman said it will be a big morale boost for the county employees and the citizens to see the new facility complete.
“I know I will feel better when we get out of the trailers,” Pullman said. “I would hope everyone appreciates it. It will be able to handle the public a lot better.”
