GULFPORT

Gulfport police temporarily shut down all three eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near the U.S. 49 exit after an accident Sunday night involving an 18-wheeler and a truck, according to Gulfport Police Sgt. Chris Ryle.

Ryle said the accident resulted in the 18-wheeler overturning. The accident happened around 8 p.m. Sunday just east of the U.S. 49 exit. Details about the collision were not immediately available Sunday.

Biloxi police responded to an unrelated accident involving four vehicles around 4 p.m. Sunday, also leading to the temporary closure of the eastbound lanes of I-10, but in that case near the Cedar Lake Road exit in Biloxi. No life-threatening injuries were reported. That accident happened in the midst of a downpour in South Mississippi on Sunday.

Bad weather, including strong winds and sporadic heavy rains, continued throughout Sunday in South Mississippi, with other minor collisions reported.

Gulfport police planned to release additional details about Sunday’s accident some time today.
