9 hurt in I-10 church van crash

Nine people – including seven children – were injured Sunday when a St. Rose d Lima Catholic Church van had a blow-out and flipped on I-10.

West Hancock County Fire Chief Ken Jones said, “We received a call a little after 2 p.m. on Sunday, reporting an accident on Interstate 10. Our rescue unit arrived and there was a SUV which had left the highway and struck a tree. One of the passengers had been ejected from the vehicle.

“We saw the number of persons involved in the single vehicle accident and called Bayside Fire Department for additional assistance. There were nine persons injured, two adults and seven youths, two appeared to have been hurt bad and there were seven ‘walking wounded.'”

Responding to the accident were four ambulances from American Medical Response and one Acadian Ambulance unit. Five patients were transferred to Hancock Medical Center, two to Slidell Memorial and two to Gulfport Memorial Hospital for treatment, Jones said.

The Highway Patrol arrived and investigated the accident, Jones said.

“The accident was near mile marker five on the interstate and it was indicated there was a blowout of a front tire that caused the accident,” Jones said.

Father Benignus, pastor of St. Rose, said on Tuesday morning that all those involved in the accident were out of the hospital.

The accident involved the church’s youth minister, who was taking the youths to New Orleans for an outing..
