USM to honor the man who brought freshmen classes to Long Beach

On Friday afternoon, the University of Southern Mississippi will honor the late Dr. Horace W. Fleming.

Dr. Fleming died last May. A decade before his death, he made a contribution to USM, and to South Mississippi, that people around here say they’ll never forget. It was Dr. Fleming who heard the cries from gulf coast leaders. They desperately wanted to expand the higher education opportunities in South Mississippi.

At the time, Fleming was USM’s seventh president. He steered Southern Miss on a path that turned its Gulf Park campus into a four year university. Fleming had his staff create a curriculum for freshmen and sophomores who wanted to attend classes at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

To enhance that curriculum, USM needed new classrooms. So Dr. Fleming launched a $13.3 million initiative that created both the Advanced Education Center complex, and a new library facility. The Advanced Education Center features 20 classrooms, four computer labs, two interactive video network rooms, a conference room, and a 500 seat auditorium.

The Advanced Education Center will be renamed in Dr. Fleming’s memory. The ceremony is Friday at 3:00.
