Police officer said he had to help businessman walk to back of car

Former Ocean Springs mayoral candidate and local businessman Scott Walker appeared to be asleep behind the wheel of his damaged GMC Tahoe when a police officer, who later charged him with driving under the influence, first approached him early Saturday morning, arrest reports show.

Walker’s vehicle was in a ditch at Halstead Road and Linda Circle, still running, when the officer knocked on a window of the vehicle in an attempt to wake up Walker, the report said.

“I knocked on the window multiple times very loudly, and he awoke after many attempts,” arresting officer Andy Lott wrote in his report. “I asked him to step out of the vehicle, which he complied. I had to help Scott walk to the back of the vehicle because he appeared to be very unbalanced.”

Some of the information in the report, which involved alleged comments Walker made after the initial stop, were redacted because the case has not yet gone to trial.

Lott noted, however, “minor damage” to the front bumper of Walker’s SUV as well as damage to a nearby mailbox, which had been knocked over. Another police officer on the scene, the report said, attempted to talk to the resident whose mailbox was damaged, but no one was home. Lott stopped after seeing the Tahoe in the ditch at 12:26 a.m. Saturday.

Walker, 30, was offered a breath test, though the redacted report did not say whether Walker agreed to take the test. The report went on to confirm Walker was charged with DUI and released on an $800 appearance bond.
