A Waveland man drowned Monday morning while crabbing near Pass Christian Harbor.
The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (DMR) responded to a call from the Pass Christian Police Department of a man falling overboard about one-quarter mile south of the Pass Christian Yacht Club. The accident occurred at around 9:20 a.m.
A commercial crabber, Chester Prestenbach, Sr., 71, of Lower Bay Road, Hancock County, was not wearing a life jacket, and was trying to retrieve a crab trap, lost his balance and fell overboard, Lauren Thompson, DMR public relations director, said Monday.
“DMR Marine Patrol Officer John White was first to arrive at the scene, followed by DMR Marine Patrol Officer Wade Dominey. Officer Dominey pulled Prestenbach from the water and immediately began performing CPR. The victim was transported to the Pass Christian Harbor, where an American Medical Response (AMR) emergency unit was standing by. AMR transported the victim to Gulfport Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” Thompson said Tuesday.
