Kiln man allegedly murdered toddler

A 20-year-old Kiln man is in jail in Louisiana for allegedly killing a two-year-old child by bouncing her head on the floor.

Officials at the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said Andrew Roberts, who gave his address as 6076 Hayward Ladner Road in Kiln, was charged Monday night with one count of second-degree murder. The charge centers around the death of a toddler he reportedly had been baby-sitting.

Officers said the child, whose identity was not released, was the daughter of Roberts’ girlfriend. He had brought the child to the home of its grandmother over the weekend, saying the little girl had fallen down.

The grandmother called 911 and reported the child was unresponsive and had difficulty breathing. Roberts initially told investigators the child had fallen from a couch onto the floor, said St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain.

The child was treated unsuccessfully at Oshner Hospital and showed no brain activity, Strain said. She was taken off a ventilator and died early Friday afternoon.

When results of an autopsy were inconsistent with Roberts’ story, he was interviewed again by sheriff’s investigators. “During the interview, Roberts eventually admitted to violently shaking the baby while holding her upside down by her feet,” Strain said. “During the incident, the child’s head repeatedly struck the floor.”

Roberts was arrested Monday and held without bond. Officials said he had been seeing the mother of the child for three months, and had cared for the child on previous occasions with no reported incidents.
