Death may have been accidental

Witnesses: Thought gun wasn’t loaded



Jackson County sheriff’s deputies were investigating the shooting death of a Vancleave man Sunday, though witnesses indicated the shooting was accidental, Sheriff Mike Byrd said.

James A. White, 50, had a single gunshot wound to the chest when sheriff’s investigators and Acadian Ambulance personnel arrived at the shooting scene on Meadowglen Road about 5 p.m. Sunday. Though witnesses said the shooting appeared accidental, Byrd said sheriff’s investigators are investigating to ensure no wrongdoing occurred.

Byrd said White and the shooter, who has not been identified, were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the shooting.
