WAVELAND

The reopening of a popular fishing pier destroyed by Hurricane Katrina will be combined with the Waveland’s first Oyster Fest.

The city has joined with the Hancock County Tourism Development Bureau for the April 10 event. Oyster Fest begins at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting at Garfield Ladner Municipal Pier, followed by a children’s fishing rodeo, live music and oysters available in just about every form imaginable, tourism director Beth Carriere said. Besides contests for oyster shuckers and eaters, the event will feature a fireworks display south of the pier.

Waveland Mayor Tommy Longo views the pier at the foot of Coleman Avenue as a focal point in the community.
