Miss America to join coastal cleanup

Miss America 2010 Caressa Cameron

Miss America 2010, Caressa Cameron, will join Keep America Beautiful on Saturday in Pass Christian to kick off the Great American Cleanup Gulf Coast Restoration Project.

And organizers say they still need volunteers to help with projects.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the West Harbor parking lot, followed by breakfast and a kick-off rally at 8:30 a.m. Coverage areas in Pass Christian will include the West Harbor area, East Harbor parking lot, the Boys & Girls Club, Randolph Community Center, War Memorial Park, East 2nd Street Fire Station, Friendship Park and East North Street Gateways. Beautification efforts will include cleanup, planting and building.

Advance registration and donations can be submitted by e-mail to Renee Brooks at greenthepass@aol.com or by calling 342-2366. Donations to Keep Mississippi Beautiful can be made at City Hall and tax-deductible sponsorships are also available.

This is the fifth and last scheduled year that the Mississippi Gulf Coast has been chosen for part of the national annual cleanup. Efforts began after Hurricane Katrina with successive campaigns each year from Biloxi to Waveland. Organizers are hoping for 1,000 volunteers.

Keep America Beautiful is joined in their efforts by Keep Mississippi Beautiful/People Against Litter, Keep the Coast Beautiful, and national sponsors.
