Parents cited for child neglect

A Slidell couple was arrested Saturday evening after they allegedly locked their four-year-old son in their truck and went gambling for several hours at the Silver Slipper Casino.

Hancock County Sheriff’s Investigator Brandon Normand said Monday that deputies were dispatched to the parking lot of the Silver Slipper about 7 p.m. Saturday after another patron noticed a toddler locked in a truck by himself.

“Another person parked next to the truck and saw the child inside all alone,” Normand said. “The person called dispatch after he noticed that all of the doors were locked.”

When deputies arrived, they were unable to open the vehicle and a Waveland officer was called to the scene to assist in opening the truck with a slim-jim, Normand said.

Once the child was freed from the vehicle, deputies went inside the casino and located the parents, Jensen Jones, 40, and Nelda Achee, 37, both of Slidell, Normand said.

The Department of Human Services was called to take possession of the child, officials said.

The couple told deputies that they had been checking on the child periodically while they were inside the casino, Normand said.

They were in the casino for about three hours, Normand said.

Jones and Achee were both charged with child neglect and booked at the Hancock County Justice Facility on Longfellow Avenue. They both posted a $1,000 bond and were later released. The charge, child neglect, is a misdemeanor, but carries a possible sentence of six months in jail, officials said.
