Oklahoma Guard trains on Coast with F-16s

‘Sound of freedom’ sparks calls

GULFPORT

The swift aircraft many South Mississippians have seen lately are the Oklahoma Air National Guard’s F-16 fighter jets, which are training at the Combat Readiness Training Center this week.

The Sun Herald will cover the training for the 138th Fighter Wing from Tulsa, which is here all week working with 18 of its F-16s.

The group is performing a variety of readiness drills along the Coast, said Maj. Billy Murphy, director of operations at the CRTC.

Murphy said it’s been a while since the jets have trained above South Mississippi, so some residents have called the CRTC about the planes.

“(Callers) haven’t heard the sound of freedom lately, so it shocks them,” Murphy said.

The Sun Herald will have coverage of the fighter wing and its trip to South Mississippi in the print and online editions Thursday.
