Governor Barbour to discuss state budget later today

Governor Haley Barbour will hold a news conference later today to talk about the state budget. This comes at a time when falling revenue is forcing all state agencies to operate with less.

The State Tax Commission reported in February that Mississippi’s tax collection was down about 12.4 percent or $33 million. This was the eighteenth consecutive month Mississippi’s revenues have fallen below expectations.

Governor Barbour has already cut $458.5 million from what was a $6 billion budget last July. And he has said that number is likely to increase.

That all on the heels of some promising news Tuesday that the state is restoring $37 million cut from school budgets earlier this year with federal money from the 2010 Mississippi Adequate Education Program allocations.

Even as money is being restored, the Governor has warned of more cuts before June 30.

Governor Barbour’s budget news conference will take place at one o’clock this afternoon at the Sillers Building in Jackson.
