Three indicted in man’s slaying

PASCAGOULA

A Jackson County grand jury has indicted three men on capital murder charges in the Oct. 5 shooting death of a man at his grandmother’s home in Moss Point.

The men, identified in court records as Milton L. “Dog Pound” Johnson, 39; Jermaine Zachary “Dark Skin, Black or Maine” Semmes, 28; and Spencer O’Brian Lawrence, 18; are accused of killing of Jermaine Jebon “J.J.” Kelly, 35, at his grandmother’s Magnolia Street home.

Police said the suspects kicked in the front door of the home and shot Kelly in the front room, a den that had been converted into a bedroom. Kelly was house-sitting for his father at the time. Relatives said Kelly had cash on him to buy bedroom furniture, money that was missing when he was found dead.

Police believe the killing is drug-related.

Capital murder is murder committed during the commission of another felony. In this case, records show, the three are accused of killing Kelly during a robbery. The maximum sentence for capital murder is death.

Agents with the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and the Mobile Police Department first took Semmes into custody at a home in the Princeton Woods area of west Mobile in December. George County sheriff’s deputies arrested Lawrence in Lucedale in November, and authorities picked up Johnson in December as he was leaving a relative’s home in Tampa, Fla.

The suspects are accused of shooting Kelly several times.

At the time their arrests, Johnson and Lawrence were wanted in Greene County on a charge of sale of crack cocaine. Semmes was wanted on federal probation violation related to a 2001 conviction for robbing banks in Mississippi and Alabama.

The three are due in court Thursday, records indicate.
