Jackson County has received a $190,000 Department of Housing and Urban Development grant to construct a RV park just north of the Vancleave horse arena, leaders said.

The money is part of HUD’s economic development initiative grant program, said Sonya Carter, a grant writer for Jackson County.

“They’re using the money for a project meant to draw more activity to the arena,” Carter said.

Supervisor John McKay, who applied for the grant, said the county will put in up to 40 RV hookups with water, sewer and electrical service.

“We have mule pulls and horse shows there, so this will allow attendees to spend more money in the Vancleave area,” he said. “This is an additional amenity to make the arena more user friendly.”

The hookups and additional parking for the arena will be constructed on 10 acres just north of the covered arena, Supervisor Manly Barton said. The project will not cover the entire 10 acres, he said.

“We negotiated a couple years ago with the school system” to lease the land, Barton said.

The title to the land is vested in the state, in trust for the support of public education, and leases must be negotiated through the local school board.

“The RV hookups will be rented on a per night or per weekend basis during events,” Barton said. “This will also give us the ability to utilize that facility better in case of emergency situations.”

The facility was used as a major distribution center following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, McKay said.

At present, the site includes a covered arena, concession stands, bleachers and restrooms, McKay said, with ball fields and a nice park nearby.

“This addition will be real good for the area,” he said.

Construction on the parking spaces and hookups will begin in the next few months, with some work likely done in-house, Barton said.
