Waveland goes for the green

Bob and Sharron Whitaker claimed a spot at the Waveland St. Patrick’s Day Parade Saturday and waited for food to fly.

While shiny green beads still bring screams from the crowd, it’s the produce that gets the best reception. Potatoes, carrots and prized cabbage heads were hurled into the masses from most of the 48 units in the parade. This 46th annual St. Patrick’s Day procession is sponsored by the Waveland Civic Association.

The Whitakers, joined by Michigan snowbirds Russ and Cathy Fishwick, hoped to catch fixings for a traditional Irish stew.

“I bought the corned beef the other day,” said Sharron Whitaker of Kiln.

Hailey Vasquez, 5, showed her 3-year-old sister, Lexi, how to hold their green butterfly nets to catch throws.

“I’m gonna catch a cabbage,” she said.

While it was Hailey and Lexi’s first Irish parade, Duaine and Connie Blackwell never miss it.

“It’s one of the best parades anywhere,” she said.

With sirens wailing, two red fire trucks ushered the floats along U.S. 90. Leading the parade was grand marshal Alfred “Tiger” Harris of Waveland and Colleen Rachel Nicole Sims of Bay St. Louis, an 11th-grade Bay High honor roll student.

Sims was presented a floral bouquet at the parade start.

“The day and the roses are almost as beautiful as you,” said parade emcee and Waveland Mayor Tommy Longo.

Between 6,000 and 7,000 people turned out for the 46th annual Waveland St. Patrick’s Day parade Saturday.
