Bay honors local school champions

The city of Bay St. Louis honored the Bay High and St. Stanislaus basketball teams prior to last week MSHAA 4-A championship game.

Mayor Les Fillingame made the trip to Jackson along with councilmen Doug Seal and Jeffrey Reed.

Prior to tip-off, the city leaders presented both coaches with a proclamation from the city stating that Bay St. Louis will be referred to as “the city of champions” for the 2009-2010 high school sports year.

Last year, SSC won the 4-A football crown and earlier this year the Rocks took home the 4-A soccer championship.

Our Lady Academy has won championships in volleyball, soccer, and cross-country this year and Bay High’s 51-39 win against SSC last Friday gave the Tigers their first boys basketball title.

“It has been a tremendous year for our local high school athletes,” Fillingame said. “We are very proud of them and we share in their excitement.”

On Thursday, the Bay High team was honored by the state legislature and Senator David Baria for its outstanding achievement.

Fillingame said the city is planning a “parade of champions” in which all of the winning teams from SSC, OLA, and Bay High will be a part.

Reed, who developed the proclamation idea, said high school sports is a big part of the community and the teams’ successes teach the kids a valuable lesson.

“We honored the kids because of their hard-work and dedication,” Reed said. “Sports teaches kids that if you work hard in private, rewards will come.”
