Police investigate 2 weekend shootings

Police are searching for suspects in two unrelated weekend shootings,, Moss Point Police Chief Sheila Smallman said.

Police learned of the first shooting, Smallman said, when Singing River Hospital officials called Sunday night to report they were treating two shooting victims, a male and female, both 16, one a resident of Pascagoula and the other Moss Point.

Investigation revealed the teens had been shot while riding in a vehicle driven by Patrick Keys, 21 of Moss Point. Keys was not injured.

The three told police the shooting happened about 7 p.m. Sunday after they turned off Main Street onto General Ike Boulevard. They said a gunman got out of a white Chevy Caprice parked near a stop sign. Keys drove straight from the scene to the hospital for help.

Smallman said, “We do have a person of interest in the case, and the investigation is ongoing.”

In an unrelated shooting around the same time Sunday, a man opened fire on a 2005 Honda Accord driven by Elton Wendell Garrett, 19, who was driving along Belfair Court.

Garrett told police he was shot at after he slowed to avoid hitting a hole in the road in an area where a group had gathered on east side of the street. The gunman apparently walked from the crowd up to the vehicle and tapped a handgun on the windows, Smallman said.

Garrett continued to drive, Smallman said, and the man opened fire, though none of the shots hit Garrett or his passenger.

Garrett told police he drove straight to the police department for help. At least three bullets hit the vehicle, Smallman said, with one of the bullets shattering a passenger-side window.

To report information, call the Moss Point Police Department at 475-1711.
