Request triggers discussion on costs of advertising

The Board of Supervisors split on a vote Monday to spend $500 on advertising for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Jackson County golf tournament fundraiser.

For $500, the county is in the category of major sponsor, but the expenditure is allowed by law as long as it is considered advertising county resources.

Supervisor Tommy Brodnax said he didn’t think the county should spend the money on an organization it already supports with an annual contribution.

“All we’re really doing is buying votes with taxpayers’ money,” he said.

The dissenting vote triggered discussion and a suggestion that the board devise a more formal way to decide who in the county will benefit from “advertising county resources.”
