Waveland Municipal Pier to open by March 20

Waveland pier set to reopen for first time since Katrina

WAVELAND, MS

The City of Waveland is about to celebrate another post-Katrina milestone: The opening of the new Waveland Municipal Pier. The old pier was one of the city’s most popular attractions.

“This is the hottest project in the city of Waveland,” said Waveland building official Brent Anderson. “People are just looking so forward to being able to use this.”

Ward One Alderwoman Lili Stahler agreed.

“We have people who just enjoy walking the pier for exercise, as well as the diehard fishermen.”

The 1200 foot long pier will look similar to how it did prior to the storm, but with one major difference.

“The new pier is all constructed out of concrete. It’s actually elevated two more feet than the original pier. We’re hoping it will be able to withstand wave pounding better than the wood planks did,” Anderson said.

Pier amenities include six picnic pavilions, 14 shade benches, a bait shop, a pier ranger station, a concession stand and restroom facilities.

“It’s going to be open 24/7; We’re going to have it staffed by rangers. There will be a cost associated with going on the pier, but we’re suspending all of that through Memorial Day,” explained Alderwoman Stahler.

Right now the pier is more than 90 percent complete. It’s expected to be finished by March 20. The $4 million project is being completely funded by FEMA.
