BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)

A Baton Rouge mother was arrested after a loaded gun was found in the son’s book bag at school Thursday morning.

Dewan Sheppard, 44, will be charged with trespassing and principal to carrying a firearm, or dangerous weapon, by a student or non-student on school property.

According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, Sheppard left a loaded handgun in her son’s backpack, which he unknowingly brought to Arlington Preparatory Academy on Dean Lee Drive.

Deputies said a teacher found the .32 caliber revolver in the special needs student’s bag after the mom returned to the school claiming she was looking for something important in the book sack.

They reported Sheppard told them she put the gun in the book bag when they left for school. About 30 minutes later, when she realized she did not have the gun, she went to her son’s class looking for it without checking-in at the front office.
