Free trees

“Just plant it and love it” was the advice Wednesday from Etienne Melcher of Pascagoula Pride to one person at the city’s tree giveaway.

Replant South Mississippi sponsored the second of three tree giveaways in the city, providing 300 trees.

Replant is a partnership between the Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain and the Sun Herald with funding assistance from the Mississippi Forestry Commission.

An estimated 1 million trees were lost during Hurricane Katrina.

The program has a goal of replacing 300,000 of those trees through a series of giveaways in 11 cities.

The final giveaway in Pascagoula will be April 17 at the Live Oak Arts Festival, where 300 Live oaks will be given away.
