Convicted sex offender arrested for not registering

A convicted sex offender has been arrested for failing to follow state law and register his home address, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said.

Dennis Wayne Passley, 28, was taken into custody Thursday and charged as a non-compliant sex offender. Passley had been living at a home on Kenneth Cole Road in Vancleave without registering his address with authorities.

Passley was convicted on July 16, 2003, of indecent liberty of a minor in Northhampton, N.C.

State law requires convicted sex offenders to notify the Department of Public Safety within 10 days of a move to the state and to register at the Sheriff’s Department in their jurisdiction within three days of moving here.

In addition, the law requires sex offenders to register their home address every 90 days after their initial registration or within 10 days of a move.

Passley was taken to the Jackson County jail.
