Murder suspect captured in Florida

Florida authorities Wednesday arrested a murder suspect wanted in Hancock County in connection with the death of 70-year-old Wenda Lafern Holling of Kiln.

Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies and detectives assisting the U.S. Marshals Service captured Timothy Nelson Evans, 54, without incident at the Driftwood Motel in Lake City, Fla., according to a release from Sgt. Edward Seifert, public information officer with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Hancock County and Harrison County joined forces in the case after Holling’s remains were found along Turan Road in Harrison County.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove ruled Holling’s death a homicide, but withheld the cause of death since it may be critical in the investigation.

Hancock County Chief Investigator Kenny Hurt said the two agencies have been working together since Holling was found Jan. 26.

She had been missing from her Kiln home since Jan. 5.

Evans, who was Holling’s boarder, told authorities then he thought Holling had gone to Florida with friends.

Seifert said Columbia County detectives, at the request of Hancock County authorities, questioned Evans about the homicide.

“Lt. Joe Lucas and Detective John Hatcher received a confession to the murder from Timothy Evans,” Seifert said in the release.

Evans is being held in the Columbia County Detention Facility without bond, and is expected to be extradited to Mississippi in the next few days, according to Seifert.
