Teen passenger dies in crash

A 17-year-old from Vancleave died Wednesday after the pickup in which she was a passenger ran a stop sign and was struck by another pickup, Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove.

Chasity Griffin was in a Dodge Ram and was not wearing a seat belt, Hargrove said.

Biloxi police said she was partially ejected through the driver’s window and the Dodge Ram landed on top of her.

The crash occurred around 9:25 a.m. at Lickskillet Road and Mississippi 15.

The Dodge was eastbound when it was struck by a southbound Ford Ranger, said Biloxi Police Sgt. Michael Brumley. The Ford collided with the driver’s side of the Dodge and the Dodge flipped, Brumley said.

Police cited Mark Abbott, 17, of Vancleave with running a stop sign. He was taken to Biloxi Regional Medical Center.

Police identified the driver of the Ford as Sidney Mixon, 65, of Hattiesburg. Mixon was travelling with a toddler, age 2.

“After impact, the dashboard was about eight inches from the child’s car seat,” Brumley said.

Mixon and the child were taken to Garden Park Medical Center in Gulfport. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Brumley said there have been several accidents in the area. Wednesday’s collision was the first fatal crash.

“Some may say it needs a traffic light but drivers who aren’t paying attention are just as likely to run a traffic light as a stop sign,” Brumley said.
