Diamondhead city opponents organizing

A group fighting the pending incorporation of Diamondhead will be having a tea party next month.

A “tea party” rally and information session by Diamondhead residents opposed to incorporation will be held at 6 p.m. on March 4 at the Diamondhead Community Center. Organizers say the event will be held to present facts about incorporation and how it would affect residents.

The effort to form a City of Diamondhead hit the courts in July 2008 when a petition to incorporate was filed with the Hancock County Chancery Court Clerk. The issue has since bounced back and forth, with a judge approving the incorporation and opponents then appealing that decision to the Mississippi Supreme Court.

In addition, incorporation opponents recently filed suit against the Diamondhead Property Owners Association, saying the group improperly spent its members’ money to push incorporation without authorization.

Organizers of the March 4 meeting said in a release that widespread misunderstanding of incorporation and its effects on Diamondhead residents still exists. Guest speakers will be on hand at the meeting.

An interim City Council and mayor have already been selected, and were named before the incorporation case was heard in Chancery Court. The new city officials have declined to discuss the case because litigation is still pending.
