Prizes await chilly revelers in Gulfport

Shivering paradegoers clamored for beads, rubber cigars and other throws at the Krewe of Gemini parade Saturday, which sent brightly-colored floats lumbering through downtown.

Throngs of South Mississippians danced to music from passing floats and tried to catch beads. Some snagged Mardi Gras strands with their own natural athleticism, while others used butterfly nets. Parade Captain Joe Krivanec proudly bragged that 78 floats had entered the parade this year.

“This is one heck of a year,” Krivanec said.

Dale and Gloria Wright, of Livingston, Texas, roam around the country in their motor home. They intend to give their large haul of beads from the Krewe of Gemini parade to Gloria’s sister, who teaches pre-school in California. The teacher cuts sections of beads and has her young students tell her how many are on the strand, which helps them learn how to count.

The Wrights had to break out their cold weather gear Saturday.

“This is the coldest Mardi Gras I’ve ever been to,” Wright said.
